5 Crazy Awesome Health Benefits of Apple Cider Vinegar aka “The Miracle Worker”

Everything Else

2 October 2015

As of late I’ve been so down with the ACV (apple cider vinegar) trend. I’m not talking apple cider or the adult beverage cider (although that’s delicious and a fave of mine) but the stuff that may or may not be sitting in your pantry and the occasional ingredient in your salad dressings (yeah, that sour vinegary one).

Before you wrinkle your nose- hear me out people! This stuff (the natural, unprocessed, unfiltered kind of course) is legit and you may just be surprised as to how it will seriously boost your health in a short amount of time (I noticed the effects within the first week of taking a tbsp or two daily)!!!

Natural apple cider vinegar is made from fresh, crushed, organically grown apples and allowed to mature in tanks, which boosts its natural fermentation qualities (hellooo good bacteria). When mature, it contains a cobweb-like amino acid-based substance called “mother” which indicates your vinegar is of the best quality and loaded with enzymes and minerals (FYI most manufacturers pasteurize and filter their vinegar to prevent the mother from forming, but the “murky” kind is best, especially if you’re planning to consume it).

So, now that you’re totally grossed out, what exactly about this ish makes it so great?

1. It’s a great natural way to detox (without depriving yourself of food)

One of apple cider vinegar’s strong suits is balancing pH levels and creating a healthy, alkalized state in your body (you want to strive for an alkaline vs. acidic state in your body for MANY reasons). It’s also loaded with high levels of potassium that work like a clarifying tonic on the body, helping clear up sinus infections, candida, sore throats, and allergies.

2. It aids in weight loss-

This magical stuff appears to have an anti-obesity effect by increasing satiety and reducing the total amount of food consumed. Also some natural-health experts say ACV’s enzymes and soluble fiber can aid in fat metabolism. One study done on mice showed that acetic acid (main component of the vinegar) slowed fat accumulation.

Please keep in mind this isn’t meant to replace exercise and eating well, but since adding in a tbsp or two into my water and drinking it 10 minutes before meals my portion sizes have decreased and as a result I’ve legitimately lost a few pounds.

3. Helps prevent diabetes/ mood swings/cravings/ sugar highs-

ACV is said to be anti-glycemic and has a beneficial effect on blood sugar levels. Research has shown that the acetic acid in vinegar may lower blood sugar by preventing the complete digestion of complex carbohydrates (i.e. taking a spoonful along with bread not only lowers glucose and insulin responses, but increases levels of satiety).

One study found that vinegar treatment improved insulin sensitivity in 19 percent of individuals with type 2 diabetes and 34 percent of those with pre-diabetes. BOOM!

4. Digestive issues be gone!

A meme saying Shots, shots, shots, shots, shots, everybody!

ACV contains malic acid, which can help common digestive issues like constipation or acid-reflux. This is because the valve at the bottom of the throat closes tightly when stimulated by vinegar, and this in turn helps keep stomach acid where it belongs.

Like I mentioned earlier, it’s also a fermented food which means its full of healthy bacteria essential for keeping your gut balanced and healthy.

BONUS- Because it’s a trifecta of anti-fungal, antibacterial, and antiviral properties, a tablespoon or two in a glass of water may even help with a case of food poisoning. So consider bringing some along on your next trip south of the border (you win Mexico, you always do).

5. It’s like the windex of My Big Fat Greek Wedding (i.e. it can do practically anything)!

A meme saying, So you're telling me Apple Cider Vinegar cures EVERYTHING?!!

Besides the aforementioned above, ACV is also renowned in the medical community for promoting great skin, boosting heart health, aiding in joint-pain relief, soothing sunburns and bug bites, strengthening bones and teeth, lowering cholesterol, and even said to help you get a restful nights sleep.

Many also use it as a cleaning supply, a garden care product and for overall hygiene. Plus it’s super cheap at only $5.00 for a 32 oz bottle.

Basically you should keep it in your pantry at all times.

So now what?

If you’re feeling adventurous, I recommend purchasing a bottle of this stuff  and adding in one tbsp into an 8 oz glass of water at least 10 minutes before eating dinner (this gives you a bit time to ingest the water so that it doesn’t dilute the digestive enzymes that will help break down your food).

Warning- the taste will shock you at first (think- SUPER vinegary). But I promise you’ll get used to it. Test it out and see how you feel. If you start to feel amazing you can play around with adding another tbsp at lunch or even one when you wake up in the am.

If you’re feeling apprehensive you can try incorporating it into delicious homemade salad dressings like this one to start.
