If you’ve been following along in my instagram stories then you know grilled turkey burgers and sweet potato fries are a weekly staple in my household.

They’re inexpensive and easy to make, loaded with protein, fiber and nutrients and pretty freaking delicious. The MLH (meat-lovin’ hubby) requests this meal often and I ain’t mad about it.

Not to mention Fourth of July Weekend is quickly approaching, followed by prime grilling season for the next two months — making this turkey burger + sweet potato fry combo perfect for bbq’s, potlucks or just a simple sunny dinny at home.

 

This upgraded version of a classic comfort meal is a also a fantastic option for family members that may be resistant to healthy eating, or a great segue way for those of you looking to test out some healthier recipes but not willing to commit.

 

Crowding out unhealthy habits with more optimal rituals and routines is key to leading a healthier lifestyle. While the standard burger and fry combo is comforting and delicious, it’s not known for being nutrient dense or optimal for your health.

Thus I’ve optimized this version with completely real, whole ingredients designed to make you feel better after you eat them, not worse. Think fries baked in coconut oil + spices instead of fried in toxic vegetable oil and organic, grass-fed meat smothered in avocado, tomato, creamy aioli and wrapped in crisp, refreshing butter lettuce instead of topped with sweet sauces that spike your blood sugar, wimpy pickles and a meh bun that doesn’t do you any favors.

Bottomline: Whether you’re just looking to have a good time with good eats this summer or on a mission to get the fam eating healthier, this recipe will be your new summer jam. On repeat.

Grilled Turkey Burgers + Spiced Sweet Potato Fries

Optimize your standard burger and fries with these grilled turkey burgers smothered in a clean buffalo aioli and wrapped in a crisp butter lettuce "bun." Serve with spiced sweet potato fries baked in coconut oil and enjoy at potlucks, BBQ's or sunny family dinners at home (spoiler alert: this baby is a crowd-pleaser so recipe is intended to serve extra :)).

Ingredients

Burger Ingredients:

  • 8 large butter lettuce leaves
  • 2 tomatoes, thinly sliced
  • 1 avocado, thinly sliced
  • 1 16 oz. package organic, hormone-free ground turkey
  • 2-4 tbsp grass-fed ghee
  • 2 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1 tsp sea salt
  • 1 tsp garlic powder
  • 1 tsp onion powder
  • black pepper to taste
  • 1 egg white

 Buffalo Aioli Sauce:

  • ½ cup avocado oil mayo
  • ¼ cup Tessemae's Buffalo Sauce
  • ½ tsp sea salt
  • 1 garlic clove, minced
  • ½ lime, juice squeezed

 Sweet Potato Fry Ingredients:

  • 2 large sweet potatoes, thinly sliced into long wedges (like fries)
  • 2 tbsp coconut oil, melted
  • 2 tsp chili powder
  • 2 tsp paprika powder
  • 2 tsp garlic powder
  • ½ tsp sea salt

Preparation

Directions:

Preheat oven to 425 and toss sweet potato fries with melted coconut oil and all seasonings. Place on a parchment lined baking tray (making sure there is plenty of space between each fry so they get nice and crispy). Bake for 30 minutes, flipping halfway through. While fries are baking preheat your grill to medium heat and mix together the buffalo sauce and set aside. Then mix together ground turkey with egg white, garlic and seasonings and form patties (should make about 8 total -- they make great leftovers). Grease a grill pan or foil with ghee and place turkey burgers on the pan in the grill. Cook through until no longer pink, flipping halfway. Place turkey burger on butter lettuce wrap with some of the mayo (save some for fries) and top with sliced tomato and avocado. Serve with your sweet potato fries and more sauce for dipping.
