If you’re reading this, chances are you’re looking for guidance or support around fertility and planning on expanding your family one day.
And while there is certainly NO shortage of content out there around fertility health (cool!) it’s also kind of overwhelming (i.e. SO much conflicting, complicated and sometimes downright shameful info to weed through).
While everyone is welcome to their own opinion and seeking out the information that fits best with their lifestyle, I want to make a few things clear as far as my stance:
If those align with your views then I think you’ll find this roundup of the best fertility books to read in 2022 if you’re trying to conceive incredibly helpful.
As a nutrition and hormone health coach and mother of two small girls I’ve done a ton of professional and personal research on fertility, and out of ALL of the books out there I found these fertility books to be the most helpful, actionable and supportive (without being annoying, overwhelming or boring).
Above all I encourage you to take what you need on your unique path and know I’m here in your corner cheering you on along the way.
There are honestly A LOT of good books out there around the topic of your period, menstrual cycle and female hormonal health, which are instrumental as far as fertility is concerned.
This is because your period, menstrual cycle and hormones are all involved in helping you ovulate each month, which is your fertility window in which you can conceive. Understanding your body and these processes will go a long way in not only naturally priming your body to have a baby, but in optimizing almost every area of your health and life.
The Fifth Vital Sign is my top choice, as it covers super important topics like how to identify menstrual cycle issues that could unknowingly hinder your fertility as well as optimizing your period and cycle health for maximum fertility health in a scientific, beautiful and practical way.
I also love Woman Code as a comprehensive menstrual cycle guide with tools to help women maximize hormone and fertility health.
Not gonna lie, this book is somewhat of a beast to read, but I’ve found there’s nothing more comprehensive out there when it comes to charting your cycle in order to optimize fertility awareness and pinpoint when you ovulate.
This is such a necessary component of the fertility journey, as these fertility awareness methods are the only accurate way to know if/when you’re ovulating to maximize chances of conception (spoiler alert: an app or OPK’s can not actually confirm ovulation).
I recommend opting for the physical copy vs. audible, as there’s tons of helpful charts and visuals.
Full Disclosure: I wrote this e-book, so obviously I’m somewhat biased here, lol. That being said, as someone who LOVES food I’ve found a huge gap in the hormone health space when it comes to fertility diet recipes. If I’m gonna cook something, I want to rest assured it’s not only going to effectively optimize my hormone health but also look beautiful, taste delicious and be easy to make (so that I’ll actually follow through with cooking it).
If you’re looking for ways to incorporate more fertility boosting foods and recipes into you AND your partner’s lifestyle, then this book’s gonna be your jam.
Coming off birth control is no joke, and unfortunately the longer you’re on it, the longer it can take to heal any underlying hormonal imbalances that might be messing with your fertility (with lots of no-so-fun symptoms like acne or pms resurfacing along the way).
Dr. Brighten is my #1 resource for all things hormonal birth control, and her book will give you all the tools needed to help you limit post-birth-control-withdrawal symptoms and naturally get your cycle (and ovulation!) back on track.
Dr. Aviva Romm is one of my all-time fave professionals (Yale-Trained, Board-Certified MD) in the hormone health space, and her new book is an absolute must for anyone looking to further their knowledge around menstrual health and female hormones.
I especially love how actionable the book is, with charts, graphs and self-assessment forms as well as plenty of helpful information to help you heal any hormonal imbalances that could be hindering your fertility.
Speaking of hormonal imbalances, endometriosis is a painful condition that affects 1 in 10 women in their reproductive years and can make it exceptionally hard to conceive.
While I wouldn’t technically label it a “fertility book” I love that she offers a personal perspective throughout this book (as someone who was diagnosed with endo) as well as a super actionable and detailed plan to help any woman with endo lower inflammation and manage symptoms, which naturally work to boost fertility health.
As a nutrition and hormone health coach, I’ve worked with many female clients with PCOS struggling to get pregnant after years of being written off with a prescription for hormonal birth control (which masks and often exacerbates symptoms) or simply being told to “lose weight,” which is incredibly frustrating and NOT helpful.
I love that this book offers an evidence-based approach around resolving the root causes associated with PCOS in natural and actually helpful ways, as well as goes into depth on all medical treatments available (with the pros and cons for each) so that every woman with PCOS is empowered to pick the approach right for her.
As someone who’s personally experienced pregnancy loss, I’m SO grateful this book exists. While not technically a “fertility book,” for me I found that before I was ready to try and conceive again I really needed to be able to healthily grieve and emotionally process my loss, and this book helped me do just that.
I also love that it’s written by a licensed clinical psychologist, but so real, honest and open it feels like I’m conversing with a friend who truly understands me. It also gives excellent advice for any woman looking to navigate difficult situations post-pregnancy loss such as baby showers or intimacy with partners, etc.
This book is a powerhouse of science-backed information and a beacon of hope, offering both men and women a look behind the curtain at what’s REALLY impacting fertility and attributing to infertility challenges, recurrent miscarriage and failed IVF cycles.
Whatever fertility challenge you’re facing, this book gives detailed nutrition, supplement and lifestyle recommendations to support you on your path to a successful conception and healthy pregnancy.
While technically not a fertility book, it IS an emotional survival guide of sorts for anyone looking for some light at the end of what can be a very deep, dark tunnel, offering support, humor and a therapeutic advice (in an un-cringey/not-cheesy super REAL way).
Finally, a book from the male’s perspective, written for men! While I haven’t personally read this book, I’ve heard a lot of great things about it, and many women have reported it was the only book they could get their husbands to read about fertility (and that it’s not only incredibly informative but also really funny!)
