Who doesn’t love a good gummy vitamin?
Personally, as a nutrition and hormone health coach, I think they’re kind of genius, as they’re an easy way to incorporate supplements into your daily routine (i.e. you’re not likely to forget it if it’s something tasty you ENJOY doing).
And truly, if you want any habit to have a big impact on your overall health, consistency is key.
What I’m NOT a fan of, however, is all of the other inflammatory ingredients most store bought gummy vitamins include (corn syrup, sugar, food coloring, artificial flavorings, etc.) which tend to negate any positive benefits of the vitamins.
Enter in my healthy homemade period gummies, which are naturally sweetened with a touch of maple syrup and contain a potent herbal blend to help you reduce painful and uncomfortable period symptoms.
Snag the simple recipe, as well as everything you need to know about making homemade gummies below.
Similar to gummy vitamins, period gummies contain ingredients (in this case a personalized formula of medicinal herbs) clinically proven to treat the root cause of menstrual symptoms such as cramping, bloating, breakouts and PMS.
Instead of purchasing store-bought gummies, which tend to include inflammatory ingredients and a hefty dose of added sugar, I opt to make my own, and here’s why:
Inflammation is a common disruptor of both gut and hormonal health, thus this recipe only uses four natural, anti-inflammatory ingredients and leaves out any refined sugars, flavorings or artificial ingredients found in most store-bought gummies.
These homemade period gummies are a great source of the amino acid glycine via gelatin, which helps to improve the mucosal lining of the digestive tract, thereby preventing intestinal permeability that can lead to digestive issues and hormonal imbalances.
These period gummies contain herbs such as corydalis and gardenia, which regulate levels of prostaglandins that can otherwise trigger uterine muscle contractions (aka cramping).
This recipe contains herbs such as Vitex Berry, which help balance out estrogen to progesterone levels and keep your menstrual cycle healthy and regular.
These gummies work to reduce period bloat through ginger, which has anti-microbial and anti-inflammatory benefits.
Acne leading up to your period is a symptom of hormonal imbalance, most likely in the form of excess estrogen and testosterone (that your body isn’t effectively eliminating), low progesterone, or a combination. Including herbs like Vitex Berry works to balance out these hormones.
Make sure you’re using an unsweetened fruit juice without any additives to avoid added sugars or inflammatory ingredients. I like this brand.
Beef gelatin is a crucial thickening agent used in gummies. Not only does it provide the chewy, elastic texture, but it’s loaded with amino acids that work to heal and seal your intestinal lining and promote optimal digestion. Make sure to opt for a brand that uses grass-fed beef in order to get the full amino acid profile and health benefits. I love this brand and you can use the code SOFRESH10 to save 10%.
The star of the show (at least if you’re making *period* gummies) Elix Healing’s Cycle Balance Blend is a potent herbal formula to help you reduce painful period symptoms. You can use my code SOFRESH20 to save 20% on your first three-month subscription.
Adding a form of sucrose (i.e. sugar) provides tenderness and moisture retention required to develop product structure. I opt for a little bit of maple syrup or honey as a more natural way to sweeten.
Blooming or hydrating your gelatin basically means soaking or slowly sprinkling your gelatin in cold liquid prior to cooking. This helps to avoid any clumps of gelatin or a lumpy texture in your gummies. You can skip this step if short on time, but I’ve found it really does help with the texture.
Gelatin can denature easily, meaning lose its texture when heated above a certain point (212 F). Basically as long as you make sure your juice is hot (steaming) but not boiling, you’ll be good to go.
Once you’re finished mixing the gummy ingredients, you want to add immediately to a silicone mold or oil coated pyrex dish before the gummy mixture cools and hardens.
The cooler temperatures will let the gummies properly set, but you want to make sure to watch out for condensation or sweat (see tip below).
I made this mistake by covering my silicone molds with a lid, only to find the hot liquid got trapped and made the gummies “sweat” and become soggy, thus losing it’s gummy texture. Thus it’s important to leave your gummies uncovered until completely cooled and set.
