Okay, I KNOW bone broth hot chocolate might sound a bit odd in theory, but hear me out!
When paired with rich dark chocolate and aromatic spices like cacao and cinnamon you only get a VERY subtle hint of umami from the bone broth, just like you would from finishing with a touch of sea salt.
Additionally, this recipe includes an option to use an unflavored bone broth powder, which makes the flavor of bone broth completely undetectable, however the hormone and gut health benefits remain absolutely noticeable, making this hot chocolate a delicious way to help you feel and look your best all winter long.
Snag my insanely rich and creamy bone broth hot chocolate recipe and details below.
Bone broth is made by simmering the bones, skin or the carcass of an animal (such as chicken, beef, turkey, etc.) for hours. This slow cooking process breaks down the connective tissues, naturally increasing the amount of bioavailable protein, gelatin, collagen, minerals and amino acids in the broth. These nutrients are all linked to an array of hormone supportive and gut-healthy ingredients.
As you just learned, bone broth is loaded with nutrients linked to an array of hormone supportive and gut healthy benefits. These include:
Bone broth contains compounds and amino acids such as glutamine, glycine, proline, gelatin and collagen that reduce intestinal inflammation and boost digestion and nutrient absorption.
Bone broth is rich in minerals like calcium, magnesium and potassium that aid in several hormonal and reproductive processes, including stimulating ovulation (necessary for fertility and a healthy cycle!) and reducing pms.
Calcium, magnesium and potassium also boost thyroid conversion, helping you convert inactive T4 to its active T3 form. This works to boost your metabolism and also regulate your menstrual cycle.
Bone broth is an amazing source of collagen, which helps to strengthen and repair our tissues like skin, bones, muscles and tendons.
Bone broth is loaded with minerals and amino acids like proline that boost your immune system and flight inflammation!
Both cacao and bone broth are high in magnesium, which promotes optimal muscle relaxation. Additionally bone broth contains glycine, an amino acid that has been linked to deep, restorative sleep.
As mentioned above, bone broth is loaded with bioavailable protein, minerals, amino acids and gut-healing compounds like collagen and gelatin that foster healthy hormones and optimal gut health. This unflavored bone broth powder made from organic, free-range chicken bones is my fave (you can add it to basically anything without it affecting the taste). New research suggests dark chocolate feeds the beneficial bacteria in our gut, which uses the antioxidants and fiber from it to make anti-inflammatory compounds with numerous health benefits. Make sure to choose a brand without any emulsifiers that can disrupt gut and hormone health. This is my absolute FAVE dark chocolate.
I love topping my bone broth hot chocolate with these gut-healthy marshmallows made with bovine gelatin, which works to heal and seal your digestive tract.
Making bone broth hot chocolate is so simple! Just follow these steps:
1) Add all of your hot chocolate mix ingredients to a food processor and blend until it creates a powder mix. BONUS — this mix makes a huge batch (10-12 servings) that you can keep in the pantry and use to make your hot chocolate in less than 5 minutes.
2) Add bone broth or bone broth powder, milk of choice and 3-4 tablespoons of bone broth hot chocolate powder to a small stovetop pot and heat for 3-5 minutes, whisking occasionally, until well mixed and steaming hot.
3) Option to add in collagen powder, then pour into a mug and enjoy immediately!
This recipe is naturally dairy-free, as long as you opt to use a non-dairy milk such as coconut, oat or cashew.
This hot chocolate recipe is already naturally rich in protein, thanks to the addition of high quality bone broth, which adds 10g per serving! However if you’re looking for an additional boost, I love adding in this unflavored collagen protein powder (use code SOFRESH10 to save ) for 10g of extra protein per serving.
This recipe is also naturally refined-sugar-free, thanks to the use of coconut sugar.
If you want to make your bone broth hot chocolate EXTRA decadent, try using an organic, A2 grass-fed whole milk, which gives it the ultimate rich and creamy factor. Just note this option is not dairy-free!
There are A LOT of bone broth brands on the market, and not all of them are created equal. To get the most gut-healthy bang for your buck, make sure you’re purchasing a brand that’s certified organic, sourced from free-range or grass-fed animal bones and ideally only contains one ingredient (chicken or beef bones). That also means make sure there are no added fillers, inflammatory oils or sugar. This is my favorite high quality brand and you can use the code SOFRESH10 to save 10% off your order.
Many plant-based milks on the market like oat, almond, etc. contain processed vegetable oils such as rapeseed, sunflower, canola and palm oil, which act as an emulsifier to help keep the texture creamy, however these oils drive up inflammation and have a negative affect on your gut and hormones as a result. This is my favorite oil-free plant based milk brand.
Many dark chocolate products contain refined sugars, gums and emulsifiers or inflammatory oils that can disrupt gut and hormone health. I love this clean brand.

*The bone broth hot chocolate powder makes a huge batch and will store well in the pantry in an airtight container for 2-3 months.
**For optimal taste, I highly recommend using a chicken bone broth rather than beef, as you want a very subtle, almost undetectable taste.
***Feel free to play around with the liquid ratio to find your preferred taste. I recommend starting out with 1 cup milk and 1/2 cup bone broth to get used to the taste, then eventually going to a 1:1 ratio of bone broth to milk. My favorite combo as of now is 1/2 cup chicken bone broth, 1/2 cup nut milk and 3 heaping tablespoons hot chocolate powder.
I’m honored to support you on your journey to optimal hormone health + happiness. Thanks for being here babe.
